I am a Fan of the Dallas/Forth Worth Sound of Saxophone. On Tenor I love King Curtis, Budd Johnson, Prince Lasha and Fathead Newman.
On Alto there are Buster Smith, Ornette Coleman and Julius Hemphill.
On Clarinet, Alto and Tenor John Carter grabs me.
Since Julius Hemphill not only had a big Influence on Marty Ehrlich and Tim Berne but also on David Sanborn, Aspects of his Sound became dominant in Pop Music.
Listen to „In my own Dreams“ on the Paul Butterfield Blues Band Record from 1068 of the same Name.
On this, his Composition a very young David Sanborn fuses Fathead and Julius in a Way that thrilled me as a Teenager.
The Drummer on that Tune was Phillip Wilson.
No Wonder some Years later I should become a great Julius Hemphill Fan.
I am looking forward to more Tunes from your Concert with him.
That was really fun to hear. Thanks for posting. I went to college and played music with Robert Rumbolz, and it’s great to hear his sound again.
Purely by instinct, knowing nothing: I loved that! Part conversation, mostly narrative, so good. I could almost see the sounds.
Such a great piece. And yes, Fuller and Kaczynski are ridiculously good here, as are the soloists, of course.
This is absolutely wonderful Music.
