I've a recording of Eubie Blake at age 89 playing Charleston Rag; his closing shout "That's ragtime!" may have been just a simplification for the Jazzfest audience.
well, structurally it comes out of ragtime, and at the time he wrote it there was no clear idea of "jazz." But that 1921 performance is very advanced with many musical implications.
